We are now living in the 21st century! Teachers and their roles within education should respond to student needs. You are currently reading on the role of the teacher and the professional standards outlined for educators in the public school system of Puerto Rico. I would like you to react to what you have read and reflected on so far. This blog will allow you to share your thoughts with your course peers and others. Enjoy your blogging!

My opinion is that being a teacher is not easy, and a teachers role today a day is not the same as it was maybe ten years ago. Today a day we must be creative, open minded and willing to give 110 % of our effort in order to accomplish that our students will have a quality learning and so they can become sucessful professionals.

Reaction to the Role of the Teacher
Throughout the years a visible change has gone through education which is presented in many aspects such as the methods that are being used, the resources in the classroom, the standards, and the expectations of both the students and the teacher. Even though these changes are noticeable, many teachers are still using old methods and resources which not only affect the students but the general reputation of the teachers. Although there are some teachers that are spending time expanding their knowledge and applying new dynamics in their classrooms since the majority of the teachers continue following old processes, the reputation of the profession has decreased over the years. In other words, teachers are not very well respected for the importance of their jobs but rather judged for the mistakes of others.
Even though the traditional way of teaching is based on lecturing with the help of a textbook, this type of learning process is commonly presented in a dull environment. For this reason, active learning is both effective and enjoyable for the students. However, there are certain teachers that are attached to traditional processes because it is what has been experimented the most. Nonetheless, this does not mean that it is effective. When students feel content with the teaching method, they work harder which will be eventually be demonstrated in their grades and their attitudes. For this reason, lecturing should not be used as the only method of teaching because students need to feel active and involved in the learning process. Overall, teachers should continue to evaluate their own methods and organize their lessons according to what is best for the students.

ReplyDeleteEducation has come a long way. We can see that the way of teaching are no longer continuous lectures where students just memorize what is being said, but rather participate in their instruction. Education can extend from a classroom, to the home, to trips and to technology. We can see changes in every aspect but I think that we are still far behind. These changes are not always implemented or not used to its full potential. Education is the basis of society; without it we are incomplete.
As far as teaching, it is recognized as one of the most challenging and respected career choices and it is extremely important to our development as individuals. It is our duty as educators to find the best solutions in order to help our students learn effectively. We must implement different techniques and activities to each student’s different needs and avoid boredom. We must be like chameleons, changing and adapting to different situations and different students to be able to work to the best of our abilities. Students must feel motivated and safe; they feel more comfortable and trust educators to help them succeed. Relationships with students are key in their learning but we cannot forget that how the classes are taught play a big role in the students development.
The 21st century filled with ever changing technologies especially on the communication and researching field. A teacher must be able to take advantage of these innovations in order to successfully adapt teaching in today’s world.
ReplyDeleteThe teacher has to be able to adapt his curriculum in an imaginative way with the requirements that the department states. Teachers have to be able to teach dynamically. This means engage students so they will be interested in participate rather than just sit and take a lecture. Also, with many technologies come risks of failing so in case that happens a teacher must be able to go on with the show. The teacher must emphasize on understanding how to use information technologies. Students need to be able to find legitimate internet research methods so this means the teacher has to be able to teach this.
A teacher has to realize that the classroom is student centered and not teacher centered. Instead of just being an authoritarian that gives lectures, he must be a facilitator of learning. A teacher must act as a coach to students. Also, students must be molded to be critical thinkers. Bo doing so teachers turns students into leaders and innovators rather than followers.
Teachers must be aware that classrooms are multicultural. A teacher can take advantage of the integration of multicultural students in his classroom. This allows the teacher to learn, for he is also a lifelong learner, about the needs of different types of students. This allows to have better learning experience overall.
Reaction: Redefining the role of the teacher
ReplyDeleteThe article is a list of expectations for teachers and their students.
The concepts, ideas and goals of what teachers want for their students are listed.
I believe that the core of Ms. Lanier article is where we need to get this
is necessary but with the requirement, teacher, schools, and administrators will
continue to teach to the test because of the responsibility requirement.
The obligated responsibility is necessary and assessments do help in providing
the accountability but the process in which assessments are expected and process in
the classroom need to change now. In today's society the learning in the classroom should
incorporate technology Ms. Lanier mentions. With this tool students will be able to make
their work with interest and at the same time acquiring the lesson. This will also
encourage the students to do a better work.
Students should have access and be allowed to use all the resources that are
available to them to improve and advance their own learning even during the time of
testing. I believe we can get to where Ms. Lanier writes about if we improve are
strategies as future teachers this way we will redefine the role of the teacher.
The other comment that I left was my reaction paper.=) However, I guess it all relates to the same topic which is the role of the teacher and how it has changed throughout the years.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the role of a teacher has changed completly. Now days, teachers are expected to do more. However, in most cases this is not the easiest job because of a lot of reasons such as limited resources, negative attitudes, and exessive pressure. On the other hand, we have to admit that there are a lot of "bad teachers" that are currently teaching which therefore affects how teachers are seen as a whole. These "bad teachers" are still using traditional and dull practices and expect the students to be interested in that type of environment. As future educators, we need to dare to be different and integrate our new ideas taking into consideration what the students like and need. By doing this, the future generation of teachers will have a better reputation.
My opinion on the reading of towards reflective teaching.
ReplyDeleteI think that this reading has helped me very much, but this article caught my attention and I have learned that reflective teaching is a way to make you see the reality of what teaching can be like and if we are really meant for it. This reading also interested me because it gives me an insight on what should I expect when I enter my own classroom for the very first time.
As Griselle, my above post was my reaction paper. But I think it is basically the same thing. Teachers today have come a long way. We see that there are different practices, theories, tools that help educators suceed. We as future teachers must break out of the dull mold of teaching and use these resources to our advantages as well as the students advantages and show "lazy" teachers that a little more effort goes a long way.
